Letter from Sandra Richardson and Rajiv K. Gandhi

Thank you for visiting Vital Victoria! Now that you’re here, we invite you to dive deeply into the data that tells the complex story of life in Greater Victoria. This site is a companion to our annual Victoria’s Vital Signs publication, offering a much more detailed analysis of the quality of life in the region.

Led by community foundations and coordinated by Community Foundations of Canada, Vital Signs is a national program that uses community knowledge to measure the vitality of our society and support action that improves the quality of life for everyone. As the most extensive community-driven data program in Canada, Vital Signs allows organizations like the Victoria Foundation to make data-driven decisions that respond to what the public needs.

As we recover from the pandemic, Vital Signs provides critical indicators of how communities are doing, telling us what we need to do to “build back better.”

We explore more than 70 quality-of-life indicators in this space and connect them to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. This data platform, launched in 2021, allows us to track more than we ever could in our magazine. Please explore the site and learn more about the issues affecting people living on the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

In this year’s survey, we asked people, “What does ‘community’ mean to you?” The answers we received were as diverse as those offering their perspectives. Three community members have graciously shared their thoughts here, and we hope you take the time to read their comments.

As CEO of the Victoria Foundation for the last 21 years, community means taking care of each other, and building a region that is welcoming and accessible for all.

In my time as a member and now Chair of the Foundation’s Board, I have come to recognize “community” as a cluster of partnerships between people, business, and government, each with a common goal – to give us hope for, and to guide us to, a better future.

As we reflect on the turmoil wrought by the pandemic, one thing remains certain – our collective ability to uplift, heal, and bring us together.

Thank you for being a part of our community!

Sincerely,

Sandra Richardson, CEO

Rajiv K. Gandhi, Board Chair
